TOOLS

The tools and consumables an installer actually reaches for on site: drills and bits, cutting discs, hand tools, screwdrivers, crimpers and testers. Sized for security work rather than general building.

TOOLS buying guide

Buy for the install you actually do

Installers do the same handful of jobs repeatedly: drilling brick and concrete, running and terminating cable, mounting brackets, and testing what has just been fitted. Tools bought for those jobs earn their keep quickly; tools bought for the job you do twice a year rarely do.

Drilling and fixing

Masonry bits blunt fast in South African brick and concrete, so they are a consumable rather than a purchase. Keep a spread of sizes for the anchors you actually use, and replace them before they start burning rather than cutting.

Cable work

A proper crimp tool and a tester save more time than any other purchase on this list. A terminated cable that fails intermittently costs a return visit, and a return visit costs more than the tool did.

Test before you leave

A cable tester, a multimeter and, for CCTV, a test monitor turn "it should be fine" into "it is fine". That is the difference between finishing a job and being called back to it.

TOOLS questions

Which drill bit for a brick or concrete wall? +

A masonry bit in a hammer drill for brick and block. Reinforced concrete needs an SDS bit in a rotary hammer, because a standard hammer drill will burn the bit out on aggregate and rebar.

What do I need for terminating network cable? +

A cable stripper, an RJ45 crimper, connectors matched to solid or stranded cable, and a tester. Testing every run before mounting a camera saves the climb back up when a pair is out of order.

Do you stock consumables as well as tools? +

Yes. Cutting discs, drill bits, screws, anchors, cable ties, glue and spray are listed alongside the tools, since those are what run out mid-job rather than the tool itself.
